BRUINS DROP FLAMES 3:1

Published on: 12/17/09 (Updated 12/17/09 10:45PM)

The Baden Bruins earned their fifth win of the season Wednesday night, defeating Heddesheim Flames 3 to 1 in Viernheim. Christmas came early for the Bruins who will go into the holiday break victorious, and slide into first place in the DPL Division 1 standings.

Immediately after the first puck drop, the Flames fore-check proved to be very effective. Several turn-overs in the Bear's end led to solid scoring chances. Fortunately for Baden, goaltender Marcus Weber rose to the occasion and saw only one of several well placed shots go past him throughout the night.

Bruins forward Andre Reiner netted a birthday goal in the second period (and yes, it was his birthday), assisted by Connell and Robinson (1:0). This was followed by a short handed break-away goal by Tom Connell halfway into the third period (2:0). Heddesheim's defense was caught off guard at their own blue line, allowing Connell to steal the puck and roof one over their goalies right shoulder. The Flames answered right back with a quick turn-over goal making it a (2:1) game with plenty of time left on the clock.

The Flames continued to taunt the Bruins with their relentless fore-check, allowing them several more scoring chances in the remaining minutes of the game. Baden's head coach Bob Sullivan called for a time-out and instructed his team to play man-to-man defense to prevent Heddesheim from any more scoring opportunities. The Bears were able to hold on to their lead with forward Kevin Schatral scoring an empty net goal in the final seconds (3:1).

The Bruins will spend the next few weeks preparing for their game against the KMC Eagles on Wednesday, January 20th at 7PM in Viernheim. We hope to see you there and wish everyone happy holidays!

BRUINS BREAK 2ND PLACE TIE

Published on: 12/8/09 (Updated 12/9/09 11:30AM)

The Baden Bruins broke the second place tie by beating the Heidelberg Knights Tuesday night 5 to 3 in Eppelheim.  In a highly anticipated game, the Bruins knew they would have to play top level hockey to beat the very talented Knights.

The Heidelberg Knights faced off against the Bruins early in the season during the HCL Ice Breaker tournament back in September.  Not only did the Knights win against the Bruins, but won the tournament.  From this point on, the Bruins knew that the Knights were a team to be reckoned with.

The matchup played last night in Eppelheim was everything the Bruins remembered from the Ice Breaker tournament - high tempo and very physical.  Both teams played tough, worked hard and played aggressive hockey.  The Bruins were able to control much of the play in the first period by establishing an early lead of (0:3) going into the second period.
